The Cat is Growing!

We’ve had a very busy winter here at Cat Canyon learning more ropes to climb on the way to app success. So, let’s get everyone up to date!

Cipadsm5First, we have an all new version of our flagship app Shop Math. Working with a new programmer, Angel Chang and our stalwart graphic designer, Nikolay Kolev we have recently released Shop Math 3.0. Featuring a beautiful graphic interface and replacing our “Angle Finder” with an elegant working spirit (bubble) level, the new calculator design has bigger numbers and buttons for easier use and the fractions calculator now outputs to a fraction, rather than a decimal. You can still convert that fraction to a decimal on the conversions screen. What will really make you sit up and take notice though, is the spirit level. This function uses your iPhone or iPad’s in-built accelerometer to provide accurate readings. The accelerometer is so precise that we have limited the output to 2 decimals to keep it from constant readjustment. Our level reads a full 180°, give it a try. I think you will be quite pleased.

Shop Math 3.0 is available now for download on the AppStore. It is currently priced at $2.99. If you already have an older version, the update is free.

iphone_menuSecondly, we have a updated King Xerxes Maze ready for download. This is a very challenging game. It is no “shoot ‘em up,” nor is it a simple “hand on wall” maze. KXM is really only for players who enjoy a strategic challenge. It’s a little like chess in that every move you make is met by move. The underlying algorithm is your hidden competition. There are infinite opportunities to improve your score but the real question is: Can you beat Dave on the leader board?

gumball free icon2Third, we have released a free version of Gumball Words. Gumball Words – Sugar Free Edition is simply a smaller version of the full featured game. Sugar Free has four rounds of play, rather than eight. There is no Game Center Leaderboard but, there is advertising.

Advertising is a new venture for us and one we undertook only after much discussion. We have all been annoyed by pop-up ads when a game is started, paused, ended and sometimes even during game play. The truth is, however that games and utility apps cost money to create and update. We hire programmers and artists from all over the world to help us out and they don’t work for free! It is also very hard to create a profitable game based on charging $.99. This is especially true for small, independent developers like Cat Canyon. Advertising helps us to generate the income we need to keep producing new games. Our goal is to develop both free (supported by advertising) and premium (supported by charging and/or by in app purchases) games. You can help us out by clicking on some of the advertising. If you see something you like, by all means download it!

Finally, you will be seeing a lot more of us very soon. We have 5 new games in development right now! That’s right, 5 all new games coming to the App Store in the very near future. Two are awaiting approval now, two more in final testing, and another off the drawing board and into xcode. And, there are more waiting in the wings. Like I said, we’ve been very busy!

King Xerxes Maze LIVE in the AppStore!

KXM new iconFinally! It’s been a long hard slog but King Xerxes Maze is now live in the AppStore. We want to thank the whole team for working so hard to get this game out. Tundra Mobile did the programming and graphics for King Xerxes Maze was. Natasha Peppler created the user interface and Nikolay Kolev (Gumball Words) helped with the last-minute updates.

Nikolay is now our main graphics guy. We really appreciate his commitment to Cat Canyon. He is an excellent graphics artist and never afraid to try something he hasn’t done before. We look forward to a long working relationship with him!

Pre-release testing of King Xerxes Maze has shown us that users really love the graphics and the challenging game play. KXM is pure strategy rather than fast action and quick reflexes. We think it will appeal to people who love games like chess, Othello, backgammon, Risk etc. It takes a bit to understand the mechanics of the game and then the challenge is making it through the mazes, collecting coins and bettering you score. High scores are a combination of time in the maze and moves to win.

For tips and tricks on playing King Xerxes Maze check back here where we will be posting a guide.

Gumball Words v. 1.1

The new faster, small and more agile Gumball Words is in the App Store now! After a long search for a new programmer we found Leo Chang in Taiwan. Leo was able to reduce the Gumball file size from 53MB to 38MB by simply changing a few file extensions for sound and background images. This means Gumball can now be downloaded directly from cellular where previously you needed a WI-fi connection.
We had a few problems crop up during the update. Test builds showed the game running slower than it should – 3 1/2 minutes for a 2 minute round! But, Leo was able to trace that to background images reloading even when they didn’t need to. I don’t pretend to understand the ins and outs of programming but the result is a much faster and more responsive game.

I really want to thank Leo for stepping into an existing game, hacking his way through a bunch of issues that seemed to pop up from nowhere, including the difficulties of getting the right key/certificate/provisioning profile for upload, and giving us a much improved playing experience.

We still have a few problems with the Lexicon. Today it ruled me wrong on “those,” I’m pretty sure that is a word. We will compile these mistakes and put them in the next update so send along any you find.

If you haven’t downloaded Gumball yet because of the size please give it a go. If you already have it, download the update and enjoy the leaner, meaner Gumball.
